Food & Finances Friday--Cowboy Boot Cake

I have been making a point to make the kids' birthday cakes homemade this year. Our budget and our lifestyle both encouraged us to be more frugal with birthday celebrations. The kids have enjoyed waking up the morning of their birthdays, to their special cakes made by Mom. I made doll cakes for Jersey #1 and Jersey #4, but I needed a cake idea that was simple enough for me, and also boy enough for Jersey #3. I found this Cowboy boot cake idea online. It was the perfect compliment to the Cowboy dress-up apparel my parents gave him.

This cake only required 1 box cake mix, 1 can of frosting, and a handful of M&Ms. I made the cake (yellow cake) in a 13x9 pan, following the mix directions. I ran a knife along the edges, to loosen it from the pan, then flipped it out onto a cutting board. With the help of The Referee holding one of Jersey #1's cowboy boots above the cake, as a pattern, I used a knife to cute the cake into the shape of a boot. It worked! (Yes, I was surprised by how easy it was to cut a cake like that...something I have never done before. All of my former cakes have been round or rectangles).

Frosting the cake was slightly trickier, because I had some broken pieces that did not leave the pan nicely, and some edges that were crumbly. The fix was to use blobs of frosting to "glue" the pieces back in place. Once again, I was surprised to see the cake still looked like a boot when I was finished frosting it.

I used blue M&Ms to give a few accents to the shape, and to put a number 5 on the cake.

Jersey #3 loved it!
