Food & Finances Friday--Doll Cake

I made my very first doll cake for Jersey #1's birthday. I am not sure what has taken me so long to try this. It was really easy, and a lot of fun. Years ago, I purchased a Pampered Chef batter bowl. I remember the sales rep mentioning that it was the perfect size for a doll cake, and the cake could bake right in the bowl. I finally tried it out this week.

It was very simple to mix up a boxed cake mix right into the batter bowl. The bowl went into the oven and the cake baked just fine. I had a little trouble with the cake sticking to the very bottom of the bowl, but that did not hinder the shape at all.

I used a doll right out my girls' room. I washed its body and wrapped the legs in plastic wrap. I added red dye to a can of vanilla frosting to frost the cake to look like a pink dress. I used frosting on the doll to create a bodice, instead of fussing with a clothing top. I am so pleased with the way it turned out.

I learned a few lessons the hard way. A single cake mix is not enough for a Barbie doll or a Princess doll. Those dolls are much taller, so 2 cake mixes would be required to make a bigger cake. Frosting shapes better when it is cool, and gets melty when it is warm. Setting the cake down into a layer of frosting might have put an end to the big gap between the cake and the aluminum foil surface.

I remember having a doll cake once when I was a kid. I think they are so cute. It is exciting to be able to make one for my daughter too. She loved it.
