Turn Up The Heat

Our furnace has been acting funny. It has been running and running all night long (something that I actually like, because the sound of moving air helps the kids sleep better). Unfortunately, the temperature of the house has not reflected the amount the furnace has been running.

Over the weekend, we woke up to a cold house, registering 64 degrees, with the furnace continually running. Monday morning it was 61 degrees. The furnace is only 2-3 years old.

My heating solution was to boil a pot of water on the stove, with orange slices and cinnamon in the water to bring about a good smell and moisture in the air. Moisture helps stabilize temperature. Then, I started up the laundry. Running the washer and dryer adds warmth to the house. I put a chicken in the crock pot. I opened up the window shades to let the sunshine in.

A couple hours later, the temperature in the house had only reached 63 degrees, and the furnace was still running non-stop. Our son was wearing his coat. I put a roast in the oven to cook all day. Running the oven all day helps warm up the house. The house certainly smelled good.

My husband came home on his lunch break (after receiving an email from his VERY irritated wife about the state of cold in our house). He chose to ignore the problem while he was home on Sunday. Actually, he has ignored the growing problem for nearly a month now. He finally wised up to the fact that I was completely out of patience and understanding.

He took 15 minutes to run to the hardware store, and 2 minutes to replace the furnace filter. Hot air gushed out of the vents immediately.

It has certainly taken me longer than those 17 minutes to forgive him. He knew about the problem. He knew the most logical solution. He just didn't bother to take care of it.

Now that I am aware of the solution, I think I am going to stock up on furnace filters. The next time the filter needs to be replaced, I will I hang one in his closet, and serve him one for dinner, and see if that inspires him to take care of the problem much sooner!
