Let me take a moment to say thank you to the creators of American Girl dolls. I did not grow up with them, so I am just now learning all about them. I am rather pleased so far. It is so nice to see my almost-8-year-old daughter playing with dolls, especially dolls dressed in historical apparel, and reading the books that go along with them. Dolls and books. I really like dolls and books for her age.
I will admit that I really struggle as she grows. I winced the first time I had to look at little girls clothing, instead of toddler clothing. Why are the styles so sexy so soon? Ugh.
I really enjoy the days of Elmo, Veggie Tales, Dora, and Princesses. Even though we do not have cable television with the Disney pre-teen dramas, our daughter still caught interest in Hannah Montana and rock stars. While we were walking through a store recently, my daughter pointed to a poster on display near the clothing section and said, "Look, Mom, that's Miley Cyrus." My first response was, "She really needs to put on more clothes."
So, trust me when I say that Jersey #1's recent interest in American Girl brings a sigh of relief! For Christmas, my parents bought her a doll. She chose Felicity, a doll from the colonial era. Felicity has a passion for horses, much like my daughter. There is a series of books with Felicity as the main character. There is a line of clothing where the child and the doll can wear matching outfits. This is another element of excitement for my daughter who places such importants on apparel. Dolls, books, horses, and clothes are a welcomed interest, especially compared to the alternatives available.
So far, I see only two things about American Girl that are negatives in my eyes. First, the dolls and their huge collection of accessories are very expensive. Second, American Girl is not even made in the USA!
Still, American Girl is a refreshing change from poorly dressed rock stars!
