Food & Finances Friday--Burnt Cookies

I totally messed up the Resurrection Cookies. The devotional and mixing process Saturday night was beautiful and memorable. The kids were really engaged. When we put the cookies into the warm oven for the night, I was suspicious that they did not look quite right.

For starters, the recipe said to place the mounds on the cookie sheet. My cookies looked more like splats...

They were still pretty splatted Sunday morning. I explained to the kids what the cookies were suppose to look like....puffed up and hollow inside (because the tomb is empty). I thought we could sample them anyway. But, when I tried to lift a cookie off the tray, it was obvious it was still quite moist.

I thought I could fix the situation. I am not sure why, because I am not skilled in the kitchen, and I have never been able to fix a failed recipe in my life.

I decided that maybe the cookies just needed more heat. So, I turned on the oven and put the cookies back in for a few minutes.....or 15 minutes, because I became distracted with the kids opening their Easter gifts.

Jersey #1 mentioned that the house was starting to fill with smoke.

I jumped up and turned off the oven, opened the doors and some windows, and turned on the vent above the stove. Thankfully, I acted fast enough to prevent the smoke alarms from going off. (Does it seem strange that I know how to clear smoke from the house, but I do not know how to fix a botched cookie recipe?)

It turns out that my splatted cookies did not rise with the additional heat. But, the wax paper they were resting on did start to turn brown, and even burned where it was touching the side of the oven.

Maybe the outcome will be better next year...

  1. Oh, I was thinking about these since Wednesday night. I think they should be meringue cookies. That means you should have beaten the eggs a lot more so they are fairly stiff! When you do it with just eggs, sugar, etc, they get glossy white. So, maybe that was the problem!

  2. I think you just solved the puzzle! The recipe did say to beat until stiff peaks formed, and I had no clue what a stiff peak was. Ok, next year I'll beat them longer. Thanks.

  3. Here's some tips on soft and stiff peaks...when you pull the beater out the peak will fold over when it's soft and stick straight up when it's stiff! I've never had much luck with meringue. Good luck for next year :)
